About: 

Koh Tao was named by the first settlers where the geographic location was like a Turtle. At first this island was uninhabited. Later people started to move on to the island due to Storms. The economy of the island is centered on tourism. These are natural breeding grounds for Hawksbill turtles and Green turtles. It’s a great centre of attraction for the tourists.

Located at: At the Central Gulf Coat of the Southern Thailand.

History: 

Every place has its own History and Geography which makes it more interesting and makes it the best reason for travelling purpose. It has a great big history behind it.

During 1933 these islands were used as Prison land as they were at a great distant from the Mainland. During 1980 the popularity of the island has increased, since this was discovered by Young Tourists. From that time it became a popular Tourist spot.

Geography: 

Koh Tao is the 3rd largest island. And the translation means “Turtle Island” where large number of sea turtles has been settled. Due to the “Biorock project 2008” (an environmental project) an artificial reef off the Sairee beach has been created. This added to the beauty

Local Languages spoken: Thai language

Climate:The year can be split into 3 seasons namely hot, dry and rainy.

Hot season: March- August Humidity increases with increase in rainfall and it creates a sticky condition where the temperature of sea gets up to 30°C.

Dry season: December-February This is the coolest time of the year where the average temperature is 22 to 29°C and the temperature of the sea will be 28°C

Rainy season: September to November. During this season the weather is totally unpredictable with heavy and intense downpours.

Tourist Spots:

Sairee beach: The white Sandy beach that lies to the West coast that extends upto 1.7km is the Sairee beach. This long beach is often interrupted by Boulders and Resorts. You can loosen up either playing in the beaches or having fun at the adventurous sports or you can take a day off by relaxing in any of the resorts.


Mae Haad: The sunset view from the beach gives a pleasant view. Hiring Motorbikes and enjoying a ride in them is the ultimate best journey you’ve ever made. Ofcourse there are many other options for transportation. But hiring Motorcycles are the best choices you can make.

Shark Bay: Shark Bay is the wonderful and most preferred spot for Snorkelling. Don’t fear about the name there aren’t sharks in the beach it’s the reefs that look like sharks.

Other than these Ko Nang Yuan Freedom Beach,Mango Bay, LaemThian, Hin Wong Bay, Tanote Bay are good spots for one day excursions. Other than these there are several viewpoints such as John Suwan Mountain viewpoint in the south and Fraggle Rock in the north.

Adventure Sports: 

Sports like Snorkelling, Free diving, Scuba Diving, Boating, Water Bikes, Hiking, Rock climbing and Bouldering are highly encouraged. Tourists might find themselves highly entertained by all these adventurous sports.
