Entry Requirements

Short stay

For stays not exceeding 90 days, nationals of the European Union, the Swiss and Canadians can enter the territory of Costa Rica without a visa. They must present a passport valid for at least 6 months after return. The return ticket is also required.

Any excess of authorized stay entail payment of a fine.

Temporary or long-term

The French wishing to reside permanently in Costa Rica in a private or professional, should contact the immigration authorities to initiate an authorization procedure of residence. Typically, this procedure is relatively long and complex. The paperwork for a temporary residence card must be filed with the Dirección General de Migración extranjeria there.

Exit formalities

Must pay an exit tax of U.S. $ 28 per person (payable by credit card, in dollars or colones).

Vaccinations

No vaccinations are mandatory, unless you have visited or transited a country affected by yellow fever: an international certificate of vaccination against this disease you will be asked. Recommended vaccines: DPT, hepatitis B (universal vaccines), hepatitis A and typhoid, possibly rabies.
