Planning to go for a vacation and thinking about going somewhere. Do you have Andaman & Nicobar Islands in your mind? This article guides you through the islands. Andaman & Nicobar Islands are one of the most important Union Territories in India.

Located at: Juncture of Bay of Bengal & Andaman Sea.

History: 

Every place has its own History and Geography which makes it more interesting and makes it best for travelling purpose. The Kings like Rajendra Chozha (Tamizh Chozha Dynasty) have created a naval base. Marathi admiranKanhojiAngreused these islands as a base and fought against British army.

One of the best history in the islands is that an American photographer John S Callahan with the help of SEAL (UK owned dive charter company) crossed the Andaman sea in a yacht “Crescent” with a few professional surfers where they proceeded to Little Andaman where they stayed for about 10 days surfing spots like Jarawa point for the first time. This was mentioned in the article named as “Quest for fire” in SURFER magazine

Geography: 

Andaman & Nicobar are a large group consisting of nearly 600 islands in the Bay of Bengal. Closer to Myanmar and Thailand, ranges in length of about 500km with Andaman in the north and Nicobars in the South. Comprises of 5 major islands:

• North Andaman

• Middle Andaman

• South Andaman

• Baratang

• Rutland island

Local Languages spoken: Tamil, Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, English & Hindi.

Climate: 

Islands are preferred best for their climate. They are typically tropical. During the months of Oct-Feb are the climate is comfortable and we can sit back and relax at the beach. Nights are cool. A walk during nights gives you a peace of mind. From June to August all the tourist activities are closed due to heavy rains.

Tourist Spots: 

• Port Blair: Capital of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Chief community of the island and the Administrative centre of Union Territory. It’s known as the “Veritable Garden of Eden” by the tourist department. Flight Live Tracker is one of the best things you should try when you are at Port Blair. Estimated Fares are between Rs. 1,510 Rs.5880. Transportation available is Auto-Rickshaws, Local busses, Scooters, Hire cars, Boats.

• Cellular Jail: Also known as “KaalaPaani(Black water) was a prison used by the British to exile political prisoners who strived for India’s independence”. And it has 7 wings with a tower at the centre for keeping an eye on the inmates.

• Barren Island: Located eastern to the Andaman Islands. And it has the active volcano in all of South Asia. 1steruptionoccurred during 1787. Recent eruptionoccurred during 2005-2007.

• Havelock Island: Named after the British general. Most of the population comprises of Bengali people. Lies 57km north to Port Blair. Elephants are used to entertain the tourists. Time magazine has mentioned the beach as “Best beach in Asia”.

Important Note: Mondays are holiday in Andamans and all the places except the North Bay, Ross Island Tour & Havelock.
